Cockatiel (female) Nymphicus hollandicus May 6th, 2018 Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender Another parrot species I was thrilled to see in Alice Springs were Cockatiels. We staked out a small cattle waterhole where these birds would come down in small groups of 5-10 birds at a time, always landing in the same 'staging tree' for a few moments before making their way to the water's edge.
Budgerigars Melopsittacus undulatus May 6th, 2018 Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender One of the truly amazing sights of the Red Centre are flocks of beautiful fluorescent coloured Budgerigar! Despite a poor wet season over the summer, small flocks of these stunners were still hanging around various parts of Alice Springs during our trip in May. We often heard them flying over head, but finding them on the ground is another thing altogether! Thankfully, one of the locals had access to a property with a small dam that proved popular with these very skittish birds.
Crested Pigeon Ocyphaps lophotes May 6th, 2018 Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender While we staked out this dam waiting for various parrots, it was cool to see a large flock of Crested Pigeons assemble on a nearby rise, then all of a sudden the entire flock of 50+ birds hustle down to the water's edge for a drink.
