Southern Emu-wren (male) Stipiturus malachurus November 5th, 2017 Mallacoota, Victoria, Australia Canon EOS 1D X Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender One of the most fascinating wren species, the Emu-wren is so-named due to the distinctive emu-like tail feathers! Just look at that tail! It's amazing how they manage to flit about with such large feathers trailing them. This species was one of the main targets for our Mallacoota adventure, but we didn't expect to come away with much as they are renowned for being difficult to photograph as they spend most of their time under the cover of dense heath. We found a small flock along a lovely walk near Shipwreck Creek. The habitat was perfect for these little wrens so we were hopeful of a sighting. But we were definitely not expecting one of the males to put on such a show for us! He popped up out of the heath onto this twig that was in the clear & sang his little heart out for us for what seemed like an eternity (probably 20 seconds real time haha!). He sang so loudly & proudly that the competing sounds of three camera shutters rapid-firing in unison stood no chance! We were all on quite a high on the walk back to the convoy of cars. What a thrill &; a very memorable experience that will be with me for a very long time.
Tawny-crowned Honeyeater Gliciphila melanops November 4th, 2017 Mallacoota, Victoria, Australia Canon EOS 1D X Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender On a long weekend away to East Gippsland with some good mates, we came across a small flock of Tawny-crowned Honeyeaters feeding on low flowering bottlebrush at the Mallacoota Airport. They were quite a skittish bird, so I was thrilled when this particular bird popped up out of nowhere within firing distance! I was particularly pleased with the choice of perch & relatively clean background presented. A fantastic evening spent with good company & a rewarding image to boot!
