Bush Stone-curlew Burhinus grallarius November 1st, 2018 Cairns, Queensland, Australia Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Canon EF 600mm f4L IS II USM lens Canon EF 1.4x III Extender Canon 600EX II-RT flash with extender I was pretty keen to finally catch up with this species on my recent FNQ trip. Although reasonably common up North, we very rarely see them in Victoria anymore. Bush Stone-curlews are primarily ground dwellers, & with their really long legs than can move very quickly! Their main defense mechanism when threatened is to freeze motionless, & they can be very easily overlooked if they are not moving. They will take flight if they feel threatened, however. This species is renowned for the sound of their calls - a loud wail or screaming sound during the night! Particularly eerie when I spent one evening photographing them in the Cairns Cemetery!
